In 2023 Gravity Garden was contracted by Envision Festival to do the structural design and to manage the build for the Sol Stage. This was one of two main stages at the event. The Sol Stage was where the majority of the live bands performed at a festival comprised primarily of electronic artists and djs. Zebbler Studios did the aesthetic design for the stage, and we worked closely with them and the production to flesh out the design to be built on site. The final form was a thirty three meter long by twelve meter high bamboo armature with a design forward façade that played host to a beautiful array of projection art during the show. The build was a multi phase operation. After the massive bamboo frame was constructed, the assembly and installation of the art began. The large plywood mandalas, designed by Dan Schaub, framed the façade as well as openings that showcased dancers on platforms behind them. Resources and access to tools and machinery were limited in the jungle of Costa Rica. We did the majority of the fabrication by hand, and the majority of the structural lifting using ropes and pulleys. A full construction package was produced and brought on site for all builders including non English speaking ones to decipher. This project was another limit pushing endeavor. It opened up new realms of possibility and feelings of comradery for everyone who was involved.
